I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords
Last friday was the LLNL spring hackathon! I spent all day working on a project to control the camera orientation in VTK using a 3D controller called the Leap Motion Controller. Im very happy to say that after many wrong turns, I eventually came up with a mostly-functional solution! Coming out of the hackathon, not only do I have working knowledge of how to use the VTK, but also a desire to integrate 3D gesture control via the leap into all of my projects. Programming with the leap SDK was easy and straight forward, and being able to move my hands in space and have the computer react was amazing. The keyboard and mouse were invented back in the 70's, and it doesnt seam like human-machine interaction has evolved much since then, but with the leap is was like my hands were in the computer directly interacting with the objects.
Im starting to work with gridster to improve the window layout. Im putting this here so I can play with it
edit: the version on this page was terrible. Check out the much more updated version here
So for the last few days Ive been diving into some JavaScript in a big way. Since I havent done anything with JS or jQuery at all before, there has been a bit of a learning curve! My part of the project has been to work on the front end of a large django web app for providing lots of cool info to users. At the end of last week we were given a mockup of the UI from the project lead, and Matt and I were a little intimidated by how fancy and flashy he wanted it to be. So for the last few days I've been banging my head against some JS trying to get a tiling window manager working. Here's what Ive got so far! Note that its got some bugs in there . . .
Here is my latest version. It still has some bugs(translation: is buggy as all hell), but I think that moving to the Gridster library will help a lot
edit: the css here is all messed up because the jspanel css was messing with the page and I had to remove it.
I started using facebook way back in the day, probably sometime around '07 or '08. Back then it was much more a platform to allow you to talk to your friends, and connect with people you had lost track of. Since then it has turned into an advertising agency that gives all their data about you and your family directly to the NSA. This article does a much better job then I could do explaining why it just might be time to quit the site. Just like myspace before it, facebook has lost its charm, and its time to move on to the next social media website, hopefully one that values its users above spy agencies.
So I've been working on this robot for almost a year and a half now. A little while ago after the mechanical team got the motors working we took this video of the drive test.
So today I made a blog. Not sure if Im going to use it for anything, but you never know, right? Since this is my first website I've made with any seriousness, there are sure to be problems. For example the current color scheme has been set to "bleeding eyeball," which Im sure the three people that will ever see it really appreciate.
